Legalize Hemp and Cannabis in California

Hi Family,

"And if my words did glow, with the gold of sunshine. And if my tunes were played on the harp unstrung..." Please help these words to ripple... ripple becomes a wave... wave becomes a tsunami... pretty soon love and compassion are the law of the land and we can dance in peace and unity!

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

FREE FESTIVAL- Rythms On The Rio - August 22-23

I wanted to let you know about a free festival we are putting on in South Fork CO, on August 22nd and 23rd 2009.

The festival is called Rhythms On The Rio (www.rhythmsontherio.com).

It will be a free 2 day festival with on-site and local camping. It will be a pass the hat donation based benefit for the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust, and the High Valley Community Center for kids, and is being put on by The South Fork Music Association, a non-profit volunteer 501-3C Group.

Headling acts will include the Nershi-Law Trio (formerly Honkeytonk Homeslice) and friends, Drew Emmitt, Great American Taxi, and others. Appearing with Bill and Jill Nershi will be Scott Law, and Darol Anger (plus maybe some other unannounced guests). The Darol Anger Trio, and others, will also appear that
day. On August 23rd 2009, Great American Taxi, Susan Gibson, Pete Kartsounes, and others will also be appearing.

The festival will take place on the grassy banks of the Rio Grande river in the San Juan mountains of South Fork CO (just over Wolf Creek Pass from Pagossa Springs and west of Alamosa in the town of South Fork on highway 160), on August 22nd and 23rd 2009. It is easy to get to, and should be a kind, relaxed, real good time for everyone. Tickets are free, but must be downloaded off of the web site.

Intervie with Vince Herman

To recall, it was here in Colorado, in the early 90s, that Vince Herman combined the talents of banjoist Mark Vann, mandolinist/guitarist Drew Emmit, bassist Tye North and drummer Michael Wooten to form the polyethnic slamgrass band now known as Leftover Salmon. These road-dogs scoured the country juggling over 150 shows a year, for years, and satisfying the peoples need for the perfect festivarian act. Vince is currently touring with his band Great American Taxi.

Drew Emmitt Band @ the GAMH

The opener - Hackensack Boys: Pretty good bluegrass from Virginia. Their "drummer" wacked an odd assortment of cans strapped together and then to his chest. Their fiddle player was out with a death in the family. Word has it that he adds a lot. I look forward to seeing them again at HSF with fiddle. They tromped down off of the stage after playing an acoustic number to do a couple songs from the center of the room. It was very difficult for this yankee to understand the words the said and sang, but I still had fun.

The main event - Descent into the valley of the full moon with the Drew Emmitt Band. A recurring theme for the day. I passed the winery while wine tasting with the family earlier, it was the last song we heard in the car before entering the venue and it was the final encore song.

They opened with Lonesome Road (Drew on mandolin) and immediately seemed a bit tighter than the last time I saw them (not that they were sloppy then). Tyler is really starting to get into synch with Drew. Not only did Drew not step in and play fiddle with the Hackensack boys as I had hoped, but it was conspicuously absent from DEB show. He finally pulled it out for the encore so we did not miss out.

They reworked and slowed down "Sailing Shoes". Probably the highlight of the show for me as the song kicked and included a killer jam.
Other highlights included "Highway Song" and "Tangled up in blue". There was more, but my brain is a little scrambled from a Sunday night show, and this cat has to get into the office.

Just wanted to give everybody a heads up on a smaller homegrown headie festival. I don’t know if any of you heard of the Joshua Tree Music Festival in Cali…but the same fella has put together another festival- Check out their myspace page. At any rate, I’m pretty stoked to be going for the 1st time.

2nd Annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival
October 20 & 21, 2007

The 2nd annual Joshua Tree Roots Music Festival is happening October 20 and 21 at the Joshua Tree Lake Campground, in the shadows of the infamous National Park. This rootsicana newgrassy folkadelic experience is for music loving souls of all ages. The music is continuous, alternating on two stages in one bowl, creating an intimate festival experience. Temperatures in the magical Mojave desert in October are ideal!

The festival lineup includes The Avett Brothers, Hot Buttered Rum, Uncle Earl, The Greencards, Dan Bern, South Austin Jug Band, Jake Shimabukuro, Martha Scanlan, Merle Jagger & Tim Easton, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, the Everybodyfields, Bluehouse, Honky Tonk Train, and the Trespassers.

Plenty of on site camping. Children of all ages are welcome. The festival village includes Organic Foods, World Market, KidsVille, Art Installations, the Love Train, daily parades and more. The music begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, and goes til late. On Sunday, music goes from 10:30 a.m. til sunset. Dance under the stars and howl at the moon in this awe-inspiring high desert environ!

Drew and band are hitting the road again in August, we look forward to seeing you at a show (or two or more!) in the coming month. As always Drew will be joined by Tyler Grant (www.tylergrant.org) on guitar and Steven Sandifer on drums and for August we are excited to welcome Ben Bernstein (formerly of New Monsoon) on bass for the first half of the month and Jason Oettel on bass for the second half of dates. LOS Reunion/Rainstorm at the ALL GOOD

So I just moved to D.C. from Colorado and made it to my first All Good festival. LOS drove me there as I couldn't make the High Sierra. Only complaint was that we only got one set. Any other crazed LOS fans out there in my neck of the woods??

It was great to have the boyz back and to get Sam Bush up there for almost the entire set was a true treat. Sounds like i missed a doozy at the High Sierra. I knew not making that would haunt me for a while.

How bout the storm?? Anyone out there a part of that one? Last thing I remember was following Vince's advice, "run like hell for cover". I plan on doing the High Sierra next year assuming they play there again. I need more than one set to satisfy my LOS appetite but the ALL GOOD was a great start.

okay so i've been on a Salmon kick since learning they were reuniting at HSMF.
after consulting my archives, i decided to transfer this particular show just because.
the sheer joy they brought to me and all my friends was something we talked about for weeks afterward.
this show features many guests and lots of great playing but will be remembered more for the mayonnaise
that got thrown around on stage. salmon at their wackiest for sure!!! that's why we love them so much.

Just confirmed for TBF's Nightgrass are Vince and Taxi at the Fly Me to the Moon on Sunday night! Nobody's dance floor defies gravity quite like the Moon. Last time I saw Vince there, even he was bouncing, despite his neck brace (which he later tossed). By the way, you can get a sneak peek of Taxi's new cd on their website, greatamericantaxi.net, and buy it sometime in April!

Years in Your Ears, Ants In Your Pants

Nothing has made me miss the Salmon boys, nor given me more gratitude for having been able to see them so often and have been on the bus, than watching Years In Your Ears.

It started off a little differently than I had anticipated. More talking head style reminiscing and less music than I expected. That gets changed soon enough as the music kicks in. And what a cast of characters singing the praises of our favorite fish... Fleck, Coffin, Bush, Cowan, O'Brien, the Little Feat gang, the Telluride BG crew, Salmon crew, etc. SCI and Yonder both explicitly and with no pulling of punches give credit where credit is (over)due for their ideas and their risin' up: LoS.

An hour and a quarter or so I thought, well that was pretty good and began gearing up for the end credits. But NO. Like a Salmon show there was a whole 'nother hour to go! The music comes more quickly in between the talk in the second half (last two-thirds, really) and it was a kick to have all those memories brought back in full color (and black and white too).

Bridget! Bert! The Mayor! The High Sierra haircut! Anahuac! Lesterville! 15 band members and how many crew members? Most of all, Mark. Mark and more Mark. Thank god for that.

Of course I found myself in it. The guy screwing with the cheap video camera in front of the stage at PigNic 95. One of these days I should do a showing of some of the LoS I shot... But that's another story. This is a story 'bout a man named Jed... er, about the Nederland Film Cartel and the Yellow Pine Picture Company and Pasta On The Mountain.

If you loved Leftover Salmon you owe it to yourself to take that trip down memory lane. Years In Your Ears is definitely a story of Leftover Salmon. And what a story that is!
